FAQS
What is raw milk?
Raw milk is milk which has not been pasteurised or homogenised. Aside from the superior taste compared to pasteurised milk, it is said to have many health benefits! Take a look at this article to see some of the apparent benefits of raw milk.
How much is your milk?
£1.00 per litre.
How long will raw milk keep?
You can keep you your raw milk in the fridge for 7-10 days.
Do you have a licence to sell raw milk from the FSA?
Yes. Our milk and facilities have been tested, and will be retested by trading standards every 6 months.
Are there any risks to drinking raw milk?
Historically before pasteurisation was introduced raw milk was associated with certain health risks, TB and Brucellosis were found in many herds and could be passed through the milk. There was also a risk of harmful bacterias. This joined with the much more basic milking processes of the time meant that the risk of contamination was much higher. In the UK TB and Brucellocis has been almost eradicated from all herds. Our herd has always been TB and Brucellocis free and are milked in a hygienic environment with advanced milking technology. Our milk is tested on a weekly basis by the contract company whom we supply to and also on a six monthly basis by trading standards to ensure the highest quality, purest product. This means you can enjoy the great taste and all the benefits of the good bacteria without any worry of the bad!
What farming standards do you adhere to?
We have a Red Tractor farm assurance, but this scheme does not recognise raw milk, so we cannot use this in marketing.
Can you tell us a bit about your herd?
We have a herd of 80 happy Frisian Holstein cows who are milked by a LELY milking robot. The nature of the milking robot means the cows can choose when they want to be milked. Our herd is now closed, meaning we will not be adding any new cows except the offspring of our original herd. The herd was bought from holland 3 years ago, with the exception of three cows bought locally. Our cows are currently housed but we intend to introduce a looping paddock after the silage has been cut.
What do you feed your cows?
Our cows have access to silage [made by ourselves] 24 hours a day, and when the cow visits the robot to be milked she is fed a concentrated feed [called cake in the trade] we have the chemical analyse of this compound every time we have a new delivery. We buy good quality cake as this is both good for milk yield and cow health. Of course, cows have 24 hour access to water.
Are there any routine anti-biotics used on the cattle?
We do not use routine antibiotics. They are only used if the cow has an infection and prescribed by a vet [She has routine visits to the farm to monitor cow health] or if a cow has mastitis. In all cased milk is withheld from the tank for the correct time period. It is diverted to separate buckets and this milk is then dumped.
